Location Planning

For our location planning we had to look into what would work well for our film theme. We also had to consider where would contain the least people, so that they wouldn't get in the way of our filming. We thought about using the souks, as they are full of character but then we we established that that it would not work as the souks are always full of people so we had to rule out that idea
We then thought about filming in the city, however that was not going to work as Doha city is very modern, which would give the film a futuristic look and our film is more rough. So after hours of going around Doha trying to find the perfect set up location, we discovered that the desert was probably the best place as its very quiet, it's got a rougher vibe then the city and its very open which give us more room to film.

Production Logo

Film Title Logo

This our film opening logo. We have chosen to do this is a sandy gold colour to reflect the desert theme in our film. As you can also see the font is very bold and futuristic this demonstrates the superhero side of the film. The transition of the words is done in this is just for a cool effect to give a cinematic feel to our amateur production.

Questionnaire

These results were pretty predictable as people usually don't want to see many different superhero powers because it makes it difficult to keep up with what powers each character has and what the importance is of the character. for this result we have decided to just keep it to a minimum of one super power not to confuse matters.

This result was probably because most superhero movies are based in a big cities such as London and New York, where the bad guys can create more problems for civilisation, people are easier to kill and it is harder for the superhero to keep their disguise as they are seen by so many people all over the city. this therefore creates more drama and creates a very interesting film. we intend to use a less metropolitan setting as it will be easier to film as we won't have distractions.

Most people enjoy the more technology based films as it creates a more futuristic look. However the results were very close together and so we have decided not to use technology in our film but instead we will use a alien type of metal which will have glow after effects.

For these results we found that most people wanted a misunderstood character as they could feel empathy for them. in my opinion i also felt that most people in their own ways feel misunderstood or mistreated. therefore we will have our main character as a almost homeless stray wondering the desert in search for life.

This was a surprising result as most action superhero films have a type of weapon, the questionnaire however showed that people preferred having a super power then a weapon, so for this result we will be using super powers as weapons more so then a physical weapon.

For this result people wanted a sidekick as most superhero films tend to have a funny sidekick. This was however debated between our group as we felt that we should keep the character as a lone ranger type of person, this created the misunderstood and mistreated theme better.

Audience profile

Four our preliminary task film we are going to be aiming our target age at teenagers and adults from the age range of about 16-24. I think the best way to show what our audience is,is by using one of our audience members.

We have selected our character Chad. Chad has been created to demonstrate what our target
audience is. Chad is 16 and lives in the Middle East, Chad is very fond of watching any kind of superhero movie. Chad says that he likes watching a contrast between male and female heroes and villains, he said he didn't have a preference of what gender the hero was because men look cool being heroes and so do girls. Chad is a high school student, who in his free time likes to hang out with friends and play american football. Chad and his friends( mix of girls and boys) go to the cinema at least once a month, when they do go to the cinema they tend to go and watch superhero films, as they relate to men and woman and everyone is happy. Chad favourite things about a superhero movies is for there to be a good opening scene to set the mood for the rest of the film, Chad also said that he preferred films that were lively and action packed, that created a vivid picture as this makes the audience connect better to the film. Chads friends all agreed with what he said. So our audience is teenagers who not only enjoy other activities such as sports but who love to watch all kinds of films. So that we can appeal to this audience, we will take into consideration things discussed by the teenagers. To ensure this we can add things to our film such as both strong male and female characters, a bold and exciting opening that enthrals the audience, vivid scenes that are eye catching and hold the viewers attention so that they can become apart of the film and relate to the film on a more personal level, this can also be done by, using cast that are similar age to those of the audience, by adding creative and action packed scenes and by using an unusual location to add to the drama and entertainment.

Gender representation analysis

In most superhero films we have a very stereotypical gender dynamic. It usually works that the main hero is genrerally a male. We also see that the people in need of saving are usual women ( damsel in distress), we see this in popular fiction films such as Superman, where he is constantly saving Lois Lane from the grips of evil. Why are these gender roles here?? Typically most of these original superhero films were made and directed by men, hence why there is usually a male saviour, However this is not the only reason, research and people's  general opinions will show you that women want to see big ferocious men coming on screen and being all heart warming as they risk their lives for the women they love ( well this is what people may think women want ), this then helps to attract female viewers interests and so superhero movies start relating to men and women. However in the recent years we see that the tables are turning in the film industry as we are starting to see stronger female characters who do not rely on male heros to save them. This is due to the change in society and the movement of feminism. This however is not detouring men from watching the films with strong femal characters, it is probably encouraging them to watch them more as they do not have to live up to a superhero standard and they get to watch women kicking but. The latest film trailer I have seen for a womanly figure as the main character is the new Wonder Woman film due to be released this year. The film it's self looks just as action packed as any other superhero movie, yet it just has a female lead and not a male, this gives women inspiration and courage from watching it.

Editing Analysis

In the first few minuets of the opening scene to The flash we see a lot of different camera angles and different types of editing shots. The first shot is an establishing shot of the flashes hometown and sets the scene of his background. The next shot is a a long shot to demonstrate that the flash is running away from these boys. It then cuts to the next shot which is a panning shot of the flash in his home with his mother, this creates a homely feel which adds emotion to the scene. This is then followed with a shot reverse shot to allow the viewers to see both sides of the conversation. This shot the leads into an eye line match shot where they both look towards the door and it then cuts to the flashes dad. In these shots there is an orange filter this is to create a flash back effect of the flashes life. the next shot is a mid shot when the flashes mum is being attacked and it then shot reverse shots to him mid shot and his mother full shot. It then ends with a crane shot of the flash standing in the middle of an empty street and it creates a wider perspective and is shot higher up so that it makes him look smaller maybe more vulnerable . In conclusion all of these shots put together develop create a very emotional driven scene which is a good way to start the program.

  Arrow Opening Credits

Analysis of Credits

The opening title of this film is a metal arrow that looks very antic, it then has the title of the program over the top in serif font, which creates an old royal effect to the title. The background is black, and the title is a smokey grey, this creates a creepy ghostly effect. There is nothing else in the background to distract the viewers attention from what the title is.

The next credit is the first cast name, cast names in this program are put in amongst the scenes. The main cast names are put in either of the corners in defined white writing. This is done not to distract the viewers but also gives them the option to view who the main cast are.

The next few titles such as the producers and and co-producers are all placed and coloured in the same way as the cast names.

Narrative Analysis

Age of Ultron

At the beginning of the film we are shown that the hero's are fighting crime as normal and seems to be easy for them. this indicates that this is an equilibrium, as there is no immediate threats. the mission is going as planned which supports the idea that this is part of the equilibrium that todorov has created.

Then Tony Stark is shown a vision of the future of all of his friends dead, this leads to tony taking lokis staff. With the abrupt title and dramatic music suggest that the plot has transformed into the disruption of the equilibrium.

After the evil AI kills Jarvis ( Tony's Computer) and attacks the rest of the avengers, Tony realizes that his creation through the staff has become evil and a threat to humanity. The rest of the film basis its self on finding ultron and destroying him. This is the "recognition of the disruption" stage of the plot.

Then a side plot occurs in the film, where a new disruption appears. The hero's start to turn on each other, which leads to them losing their confidents and causes them to lose a battle against Ultron. They then realize that they are better off as a team, due to Nick Fury's inspiration pep talk with the team. They then go to find ultron as a team once again and destroy him.

Some of the avengers decide to go their own way however avengers group B is formed to protect the world, and with the new members of the team the world is finally saved from evil!!!!!!

Film Opening Conventions

Film conventions are a series of stereotypical things that happen in a certain type of film. Our film is  a superhero based film so i will be looking at different types of superhero conventions, i have selected    the opening scene of Avengers 2 to analysis what film conventions are used to create a basic superhero film. The first basic film convention in this film is the fact that it starts in the middle of the action, this is usually how superhero films begin to instantly throw you into the film and the action. The second film convention i noticed was the fact that there is a mix of mortals and immortals, in this film that would be people like Thor (immortal) and the Black Widow (mortal) this helps the viewer almost connect to the superhero film better as they don't have to fit into the profile of the immortals but can fit better with the mortals, while still being apart of the fantasy. Generally superhero movies start with quick cuts showcasing the action of the film genre. Male actors usually are stereotypically muscular this is to show the strength and characters. Female actors in the superhero movies usually the victims( damsel in distress) this is to empathise with women emotions and that they need protecting, by the superheroes. These are all things that are usual conventions in superhero movies, each movie genre will have their own set of conventions, that may not happen in a superhero movie.

Superhero Film Genres:

The Flash:

For the flash we analyze the genre and category that it fits under, for this particular film I would definitely say that this film fits the sci-fi and fantasy genre. My reason for this is because the film opening instantly sets the scene with some kind of human being that is flashing in neon colors through the city, it's not a documentary because this would not happen in reality and therefore is a fantasy film.

In this opening scene there is a narrative of the flash talking to the audience about his life ,
you can then tell from the flashback scene that the film is about the young boys life , this then sets the scene for what the film/program is about. The scene can also be set by the location that the first scene is produced in, the opening scene cuts straight to a city, which instantly provokes a sense of reality to this fantasy film.

The characters in this first scene are presented as very vonrable and need protecting from bullies and from the world, however it's very contradictory as you later find out one of the characters that needed protecting the most became the protector of a whole city.

There is no narration in this first scene so the whole context of the opening of the film is set by things such as, characters, location, time and camera angles, all of these things help to set the tone of the film, including filters that create a hazed effect on scenes to give an illusion of a flashback.

The editor of this film has used lots of editing such as the lighting streaks behind the man running at super sonic speed, these effects are all used to create the sci-fi/ fantasy.

Avengers 2:

For Avengers 2 we can see from this opening scene that this film hybrid genre sci-fi/fantasy/action film.  Avengers 2 cuts straight into the middle of the action as we see our heros fighting the villains, by starting this film we are given an insight into what each superheroes powers and personalities are, we will also be given a foundation of what they are fighting for and who they are fighting

This creates a story line of what the film is about. This scene for a few minutes is taken in one cut, and creates a panoramic view of the fight scene. This scene is a rather long opening scene but this creates a more detailed storyline to follow, as superhero films can get very complex.

We see that some characters are just very good at fighting and they have specific weapons such as 'the black widow ' , and then we have other characters such as the 'Hulk'  who has become mutated from scientific reason, and lastly we have the characters such as 'Thor' who potentially is an alien from another universe. So in one scene we get to see that there are a few different genres of sci-fi and fantasy characters in this film.

Thor:

The opening scene for Thor is the same si-if genre as the other films above, however it starts in a more mystical way, as it doesn't start in a city or a place on earth, it seems to start on another planet, amidst a war. This scene uses lots of special effects to creat supernatural powers.

During this opening scene you develope an idea of what is happening and the storyline starts to unravel, main characters are revealed.

Thor starts in a less action packed way, the scene starts in a very magical and calm way, this may be due to the blue "lights", which creates a cool tone to the scene. The film opening is almost creepy and eery.

The editing cuts are a mixture of slow and fast, the beginning starts very  slowly as it zooms into the land of Jotunheim in darkness surrouned by mist. The next scene starts to speed up as the war begings creating an intensity of the scene.

film title analysis 4

This is the title for Thor The dark world, this is also another superhero movie however this is not such a futuristic film, it is more ancient themed. The title of Thor is bold and in an ancient font with a brick wall kind of texture inside the title, this could suggest ancient ruins or something along those lines.

Film title analysis 3

This is the title for Batman vs Superman, this a superhero film. The imagery on the title is a black bat to represent the character Batman and inside the bat is Superman's iconic logo. The background of this title is a dark grey color with white highlighting around the imargery to make the imagery stand out. The title is in fine white writing at the bottom as the imagery speaks for itself of what the film is

film title analysis 2

This is the title for Aquaman, this is a superhero film that is about a water powered man. The title is themed under the sea and shows that this is related to water powers, there is also a trident in the water which could suggest the greek god Poseidon. The colour of the title is a gold metallic which relates to the weapon in the water.

Film Title Analysis

Film Titles are very important as they are at the beginning of the film and will show the audience what type of film they are about to experience. The way the film titles are designed can reflect the film in many different ways, for example font, colour and design, it can also include imagery.

This is the title for Tron Legacy, this is a sci-if film and so therefore it has to have a very futuristic title. This is done by the colour of the title being blue this is very electronic and cold which could suggest the future being dark and cold. The title is very bold and stands out against the black background which shows that this is a very strong film. The font is a slightly abstract font but actually  reflects the content of the film, everything in this film is very similar to the font.
